Absorbing the Big Ones
Volumetric and application attacks need different tools.
Volumetric and application DDoS are two different problems. Akamai Prolexic scrubs L3 and L4 volumetric floods upstream, while CDN edge absorbs and caches L7 pressure close to the attacker. The pattern that makes it work is origin cloaking, so the real addresses are never exposed, plus BGP-based failover between scrubbing centers so a regional event degrades gracefully instead of going dark.
Where AI helps
Machine learning shines at telling a flash crowd apart from a flood. Adaptive mitigation learns an attack fingerprint and tightens only the controls that matter, instead of blunt rate caps that punish real users. The goal is to absorb the attack without anyone noticing the defense.
